The Streets of Morocco are paved with…creatures

Today I saw an old gentleman in a embroidered hat crossing the ‘Oxford Street’ of Marrakech. Nothing unusual in that, except he was cradling a fully grown peacock in his arms.

Yesterday, I came out of my apartment building and found a baby camel parked in the street.

A couple of weeks ago I came up the steps from an underground car park in a central Marrakech plaza and discovered a tortoise stranded midway up. Or down. I hope it was up because we carried him upstairs and deposited him in a flower bed.

Of course you can head for the Place aux Épices in the Medina and find all sorts of caged chameleons, tortoises, and other strange and startling creatures for sale. But I rather like stumbling across these creatures in unexpected locations.

And if you are really lucky and find yourself in the right spot in the countryside, you may just witness a troop of tree-climbing goats….

Who needs to go on safari…?
